A Complication in Pregnancy - Varicose Veins

For many women, pregnancy is a time of joy and excitement. But for some, it can also be a time of anxiety and worry, especially if they develop complications like varicose veins. Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins that usually occur in the legs and feet. They're common during pregnancy because the extra weight from the baby can put pressure on the veins and cause them to bulge. What Causes Varicose Veins? During pregnancy, the level of the hormone progesterone increases. This hormone relaxes smooth muscles, including those in blood vessel walls. This relaxation, combined with the added pressure from the baby, can cause the veins to stretch and enlarge.
